An overview of the EU’s key institutions, the scope of its activities, how EU legislation is made and how it is implemented in the UK, and how the UK Parliament scrutinises the EU

  • Understand the structure of the EU and its key Institutions
  • Understand the differing roles and responsibilities of the European Commission, the Council of Ministers and the Parliament
  • Understand the scope of the Commission’s work and its budget
  • Understand the work of ECOSOC, COREPER, UKREP and the Committee of the Regions
  • Learn about the legislative process in the EU and how the Institutions take decisions, make regulations and issue directives
  • Understand how EU legislation is implemented in the UK, and the role of the European Secretariat
  • Understand how Parliament scrutinises EU Legislation in both the Commons and the Lords
