The Policing and Community Safety Sector: Understanding the Criminal Justice System

This practical day will look at policy formulation, cross-cutting, the role of the Police and other partners, LAAs, the Casey review and likely policy developments, dealing with binge drinking, knife crime and gangs, and the effectiveness of interventions in different cultures in the UK such as “honour” crime and local drugs policy.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand how policy is formulated in Whitehall and Westminster
  • Understand the roles of the Ministry of Justice and the Home Office
  • Understand criminal justice policy as a constantly evolving framework of responsibilities and initiatives
  • Understand the roles of all the major organisations with responsibility in this area
  • Understand the current debate and how policy is likely to develop in the short and medium terms
  • The day is organised with the objective of dialogue and discussion being themed throughout leading into a short workshop session where participants will seek to understand how future scenarios will impact upon them, and the agency for which they work
