Lord Harris of Haringey
Toby Harris was a Councillor in the London Borough of Haringey from 1978-2002, and was Leader of the Council from 1987-99. He was also Deputy Chair of the Association of Metropolitan Authorities from 1991-97 and Chair of the Association of London Authorities from 1993-95, the Local Government Anti-Poverty Unit from 1994-97, and the Association of London Government from 1995-2000.
Among a number of other significant positions, He was also a member of the Joint London Advisory Panel, the London Ambulance Service NHS Trust, the London Pension Fund Authority and the Metropolitan Police Committee, and an executive member of the Local Government Association and the Association of Police Authorities.
He became a Member of the Greater London Authority for Brent and Harrow from 2000-04 and was Chairman of the Metropolitan Police Authority during the same period. Since then he has been a Member (representing the Home Secretary) of the Metropolitan Police Authority, as well as Vice-president of the Association of Police Authorities and the Local Government Association. He sits on the Police Counter-Terrorism Board and the Police Counter-Terrorism Ministerial Advisory Group.
He was raised to the peerage as Baron Harris of Haringey, of Hornsey in the London Borough of Haringey in 1998.
